Applicants fill their details and visit the kiosk (either specified by the agency or otherwise), authorized for live scan. Here, the applicant’s fingerprints are electronically captured with the help of a scanner. None other than a certified fingerprint technician or qualified law enforcement personnel is authorized to capture the fingerprints. The fingerprints are transmitted to the DOJ or FBI for screening with their extensive database. The fingerprint is matched with all the fingerprints in the database.

If the fingerprints fail to match with the data, the results are returned across a span of 48 to 72 hours. Manual intervention is absent. However, if the prints match, then a technician compares the RAP sheets to verify the disposition of the arrest. This may cause delay. Information of the delay must be communicated. In case the disposition is not specified, then the technician makes the required efforts to check the past records to inquire about the disposition of the arrest. Without complete information, proper results, which will eventually affect the license or employment decision, cannot be given. So, the technician contacts, the sheriff, checks court records or others to receive appropriate information. Only after all these enquiries are done, the final result is communicated to the requesting agency.  

It is communicated either by electronic mail or a hard copy. However, the law restricts the authorities from sharing this information with any other agency or authority, other than the requesting agency in the present or future. Any other agency requiring background check must repeat the process with a new request form.
